Why Are Amphibian Populations Declining What is being done to help Amphibians Canada Species At Risk Responding to an Amphibian Extinction Crisis

AMPHIBIAN DECLINES

Amphibians have existed for a very long time. They evolved before the reign of the dinosaur and have thrived for about 300 million years. However, the future of many species of amphibians is now questionable. In 1989 the concern about amphibian declines emerged during the First World Congress of Herpetology. Herpetologists from all over the world reported declines in amphibian populations, and in some cases extinction had already occurred. Toronto Zoo's Adopt-A-Pond Wetland Conservation Programme began in 1990, to focus on preserving the wetland habitats where amphibians live. At this very moment, amphibians are facing an extinction crisis. A recent assessment found that nearly one-third (32%) of the world's amphibian species are threatened and at least 43% have declining populations (www.globalamphibians.org).
